Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in private conversations, acknowledged Armenia’s right to independently resolve the issue of amendments to its Constitution. At the same time, Baku has stated that it does not want to sign a peace agreement with Yerevan while the current constitutional provisions remain in force.

Globalinfo.az reports that Pashinyan spoke about this at a panel discussion titled “MaskOFF”, organised by the “Restart” foundation.

According to the prime minister, when discussions with Azerbaijan began, the position taken as a basis was that the constitutional issue is Armenia’s internal affair.

Pashinyan noted that in private conversations with Ilham Aliyev, Baku received this position with understanding, but the Azerbaijani side made clear that it does not want to sign a peace agreement with the existing constitutional provisions.

Pashinyan stressed that while these two positions may appear similar, there is a fundamental difference between them, and that difference must be taken into account when assessing the situation.
