U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stark warning to senior officials working at the State Department.
Globalinfo.az reports that Reuters published the information, citing four sources familiar with the matter.
Rubio demanded that staff act within their powers and clear important decisions in advance:
“At a meeting last week, Rubio criticized some staff members for making decisions without clearing them with leadership. The secretary of state said important initiatives must be implemented only after they are approved by him or by his deputy, Christopher Landau.
Rubio also stressed that those who engage in unethical conduct will be removed from their posts regardless of their connections in the government.
This warning came after the resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle has been accused in the media of brokering contacts with representatives of the Trump administration in exchange for payment. She has rejected these allegations.”
Reuters sources also linked the departure of Jeremy Lewin, head of the State Department’s policy planning section, to leadership’s dissatisfaction with uncoordinated steps.
Lewin said his resignation was voluntary and had nothing to do with the meeting.
The U.S. State Department did not comment on the agency’s request in the matter.
