“The future security architecture should not be based on negotiations with Russia on dividing spheres of influence in Europe.”

Globalinfo.az reports that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sybiha made the statement.

“The formula for Europe’s security architecture is not negotiations with Russia on dividing spheres of influence in Europe, but a formula for reliable protection from Russia. All this belongs to the past. There will be no more spheres of influence. There will be no second Yalta… The time has come for European strength and unity,” Sybiha said.

The minister added that Russia cannot be a guarantor of Europe’s security.

It should be noted that earlier, after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, US President Donald Trump said an agreement on Ukraine that could affect all of Europe would be reached.

Although the US leader did not disclose details of the meeting, he promised that everyone would be satisfied. At the same time, Politico wrote that Europe reacted skeptically to Trump’s statements about a Ukraine agreement that would affect the entire continent.

The article notes that the Trump administration’s opaque proposal for a new pan-European security agreement with Russia has raised doubts in European capitals. European countries are concerned that such an agreement could push the continent into the background in decision-making.

It should be noted that the term “Second Yalta” refers to the Yalta Conference of the leaders of the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom in 1945. The political future of post-war Europe and spheres of influence were discussed at that meeting. In modern political discourse, the term denotes the possibility that the United States and Russia could determine the future of Europe and Ukraine without the participation of other European states.
