“We are ready to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan.”
Globalinfo.az reports that this was stated by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan during a discussion of the TRIPP project in parliament.
Lena Matevosyan, a lawmaker from the “Strong Armenia” faction, addressed a question to the minister:
“Does submitting the TRIPP project for approval while the peace agreement has not yet been signed mean that Armenia will also fulfil Azerbaijan’s other demands?”
The lawmaker also recalled the issue of amending Armenia’s Constitution in this context.
In response, Mirzoyan noted that Azerbaijan, even after initialling the peace agreement, says it will not sign the document until concerns related to Armenia’s Constitution are removed.
According to the minister, there is nothing in Armenia’s Constitution that gives cause for concern:
“We do not share Azerbaijan’s approach on this issue, and Azerbaijan says it does not share ours. Currently, no negotiations on Armenia’s Constitution are being held between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
Note that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan earlier called the Declaration of Independence, which contains his country’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan, a “threat to peace.” According to him, the new Constitution should not contain references to the Declaration of Independence, since this creates a risk of conflict.
