The initial contours of the political battle over the 2028 US presidential election are already beginning to emerge. Attention has focused on the position of Vice President J.D. Vance, who is reportedly seeking to rally forces dissatisfied with President Donald Trump’s foreign policy.
According to foreign media reports, Vance is urging Trump to take steps to end the war with Iran and reach an agreement with Tehran. This has brought both his future political ambitions and differences within the Trump administration over Iran policy into focus.
Could J.D. Vance become the Republican Party’s candidate in the 2028 presidential election? Would taking a position different from Trump’s foreign policy give him an advantage in the election?
Political analyst Farhad Mammadov told Globalinfo.az that under the US political system, midterm elections are held two years after presidential elections:
“After the midterm elections, the presidential race unofficially begins. It should be taken into account that Trump will not be able to run for president again. Thus, the question arises within the Republican Party as to who will be nominated for the next presidential election. Those seeking to present themselves as worthy candidates for the post have become more active. Both Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance have stepped up their activity.
The Iran war has created serious problems for the United States. This is an important factor both from a geopolitical perspective and in terms of the Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm elections. In such a situation, a split may occur within the party. There is currently competition in this direction.

However, it should be taken into account that Trump will make the key decision over the next two years. Within the Republicans, he will move in the direction of whichever political force can guarantee him support in his future activities and security.
A great deal may still happen over the next two years. Trump will pursue his policies in line with both his personal interests and the interests of the political and financial groups supporting him.”
