Georgia’s Foreign Ministry has responded to the European Union’s position after the bloc suspended the country’s membership process. Tbilisi accused the European Commission of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

“The European Commission’s ability to objectively assess the country’s progress has been limited by the European Union itself. In particular, during the reporting period Brussels held no meetings with Tbilisi at any level under the Association Agreement,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry accused the European Commission of selective analysis and of politicising legal issues, describing this as a violation of the rule of law and an open attempt to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.

In an interview with Globalinfo.az, Zaur Mammadov, chairman of the Public Association “Baku Political Science Club” and political analyst, said that Georgia’s membership in the European Union is not on the agenda at present:

“Neither Georgia wants this, nor the European Union. The issues aired in the press and the statements made between them are details. The essence of the matter is that Georgia does not want to make a radical choice like Armenia and Ukraine.

Moreover, relations between the European Union and Georgia have not improved. There are problems between individuals as well.

This is not a problem for Georgia. It is not known in which direction the processes in the region will develop. I believe that Georgia is not losing in this process; on the contrary, there are points where it gains.”
