Claims that Iran could be hit with nuclear weapons have raised serious concern on the international agenda. Pickaxe Mountain, located near the Natanz nuclear facility, has even been named as a possible target.
According to the claims, the administration led by U.S. President Donald Trump could make such a decision under pressure from Israel. However, these are not yet reports of a confirmed military plan, but information circulated in the media and not confirmed by official sources.
The issue is made even more sensitive by the prospect of the United States expanding military operations against Iran again. Such a move could alter not only the Iran-U.S. confrontation but also the entire security architecture of the Middle East.
Could Trump really decide to use nuclear weapons? Why is Pickaxe Mountain being cited as a possible target? What threats could such a strike pose to the region, particularly Azerbaijan, and could it drag the world into the risk of a wider war?
Political analyst Mahammad Asadullazade told Globalinfo.az that the war against Iran is on the verge of entering a new and more dangerous phase:
“Let us take into account that Iran’s Natanz and Fordo nuclear facilities, particularly the enriched uranium infrastructure located beneath mountains, are considered militarily complex targets. It may not be possible to disable these facilities through conventional air strikes.
Israel’s recent demands for tougher military action against Iran’s nuclear programme, and discussions about U.S. participation in possible operations, are causing concern.
The main complexity is that military operations against Iran do not guarantee the complete seizure of its enriched uranium stockpiles or the permanent elimination of its nuclear programme. From this perspective, compromise options such as transferring enriched uranium to a third country could also come onto the agenda in the negotiating process.
I believe Iran could be forced to make certain concessions if large-scale military pressure increases. This is because Tehran faces a serious choice between preserving its nuclear programme and ensuring state security.

However, a nuclear strike by the United States and Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities, especially underground infrastructure, could have entirely different and catastrophic consequences. It would create serious security, environmental and geopolitical risks not only for Iran, but also for the Gulf countries, Azerbaijan and Turkey.
Such a precedent could undermine existing prohibitions and deterrence mechanisms concerning the use of nuclear weapons in the international relations system. It could even create a dangerous precedent that increases the likelihood of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
As can be seen, the use of nuclear weapons against Iran would not merely change the scale of a regional war. It would deal a severe blow to the world’s political and security order as a whole.”
