As reported, people in the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Estonia, Switzerland and several other countries have been urged to prepare for emergencies — war, internet outages and crises. Governments have issued messages calling on the public to be ready for a crisis lasting three days in some countries and one week in others.

Why are calls for people to prepare for emergencies being made so frequently in several countries around the world? Are these risks also relevant to Azerbaijan?

Eshgin Nurushov, technology director of ITStation, told Globalinfo.az that the frequent calls are linked not only to rising geopolitical tensions worldwide, but also to growing dependence on digital systems:

“Today, prolonged disruptions to electricity, the internet and mobile communications can seriously affect people’s daily lives. Cyberattacks create major problems, particularly because government agencies, banks, hospitals and transport systems depend on digital infrastructure. Natural disasters, technical accidents and interruptions to energy supplies also make advance preparations necessary. That is why many countries advise citizens to keep reserves so they can meet their basic needs independently for a certain period. However, such calls do not necessarily mean there will be a war or that the global internet will stop functioning completely.”

The expert said Azerbaijan should also take these risks into account in terms of digital security, energy supply and the resilience of communications infrastructure:

“However, based on the information currently available, there are no grounds to say that a crisis will definitely occur in the country. It is advisable for the public to be prepared for internet and electricity outages, as well as other emergencies. Most importantly, people should follow official warnings, keep electronic and paper copies of important documents, have a backup power source for their phones and prepare essential supplies for several days.”
