The Egyptian parliament has approved the possibility of providing military support to Saudi Arabia amid an intensification of Houthi attacks in Yemen.

Globalinfo.az reports that the decision could result in Cairo becoming directly involved in the expanding conflict in the region.

According to the report, the Egyptian parliament approved a decision providing for army support in the defence of Saudi Arabia.

It was noted that the move is linked to escalating tensions in Yemen, where attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia have increased:

“Houthi attacks are a cause for concern not only for Saudi Arabia but also in terms of Egypt’s strategic interests. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, located near Yemen’s coast, connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is of major importance for international maritime trade conducted through the Suez Canal.”
