Presenter Ayten Safarova’s statement that she had given up sugar has sparked discussion. She said sugary foods make her feel sleepy and yawn while on air. Some people believe giving up sugar is beneficial for health, while others consider sugar essential for the body.

How does giving up sugar affect the body? Do sugary foods really cause drowsiness and fatigue? How appropriate is it to eliminate sugar completely from one’s daily diet?

Food safety expert Asim Valiyev told Globalinfo.az that, whether people want it or not, they consume sugar through food and fruit:

“Giving up sugar completely is not necessary for everyone. The main issue is what source we get sugar from and how much we consume. Sugary foods can cause some people to feel tired and sleepy, but this cannot be applied to everyone.”

The expert said post-meal drowsiness is not linked to sugar alone:

“The amount and composition of the food we consume, the time of day, our previous sleep and physical activity can also affect this. From this perspective, it would not be right to generalise conditions such as drowsiness and fatigue to everyone. On the other hand, reducing sugar intake has benefits. Above all, excessive consumption of sweet drinks, desserts with high sugar content and sugar added to food should be reduced. But completely cutting out sugar should not mean removing fruit, vegetables, grains and other carbohydrate sources from the diet. Carbohydrates are an important source of energy for our bodies. We can reduce the amount of added and free sugar. Therefore, a more appropriate approach is to reduce sweets and sugary drinks.”
