“The prime ministers of Denmark and Sweden criticized the prime minister of Norway and the president of Finland for holding phone calls with Vladimir Putin. This points to the divisions within Europe regarding relations with Russia.”
According to Globalinfo.az, Armenian political analyst Hakob Badalyan made this assessment.
He noted that the situation illustrates how inadequate the concept of the “collective West” is and how far removed it remains from political reality:
“In theory, one cannot rule out that Europe is playing a double game to lure Putin into some kind of ‘trap.’ However, that would be a very naive assumption or approach, especially considering that this is not an inexperienced president, but Putin, who possesses considerable political experience. No matter how experienced or even cunning one may be, as the saying goes, even a fox can get caught in a snare. Nonetheless, such a scheme would be far too simplistic.”
The political analyst pointed out that it is difficult to imagine such an intense clash of interests within Europe:
“On the other hand, once the American security umbrella is pulled away from Europe, the fight for a place in the sun intensifies on its own.”
It is worth noting that Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre held telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Commenting on the call, Stubb said the discussions were direct and focused on concrete issues. Reminding that Russia borders Finland and Norway, he stressed that the terms under which the war ends matter not only for the security of these two nations, but for the entire European Union (EU). According to the Finnish leader, direct negotiations between the parties are essential to stop the war.
