In Israel, Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the opposition Yashar party, has won the backing of a majority of parliamentary parties as a candidate for prime minister. According to the report, 67 of the Knesset’s 120 lawmakers in the new convocation supported his candidacy.
This happened during consultations between the lawmakers and President Isaac Herzog.
But is Benjamin Netanyahu leaving his post? What changes in Israel’s foreign policy will Eisenkot’s premiership bring?
Political analyst Turab Rzayev, speaking to Globalinfo.az, said that Israeli President Isaac Herzog showed particular initiative in overcoming the political deadlock that had arisen.
“In effect, a political deadlock had arisen in the country. Netanyahu could not form a government, and the rival bloc failed to achieve any result in that direction either. In such a situation the president’s intervention in the process created conditions for normalizing political relations. The Arab parties are in effect in opposition to the government. But they also do not want to act together with the opposition. In such a situation no single political force can form a government on its own.
Isaac Herzog met with the Arab parties and said that no one should discriminate against Arab citizens. After that meeting the Arab parties decided to support Gadi Eisenkot. At the same time, Avi Liberman also announced that in the current reality he could support Eisenkot. All this shows that Eisenkot’s chances of forming a government are in effect quite high.

At the same time, no serious changes in Israel’s foreign policy are expected after he comes to power. There will be no fundamental change in relations with neighbouring countries, nor with Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump supported Benjamin Netanyahu‘s staying in power. It is possible that the new political situation will, for that very reason, lead to certain disagreements with the Trump administration.
Israel’s international standing has been seriously damaged in recent times. The country is accused of committing genocide and of disregarding the norms of international law. It is possible that the new government will take certain steps to change Israel’s international image and restore its damaged standing.”
