In Israel, the candidacy of opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot for prime minister has won the support of a majority in parliament.

Globalinfo.az reports, citing Israeli media.

It was reported that 67 of the 120 members of the newly elected Knesset supported Eisenkot’s candidacy.

During consultations with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, all parties in the opposition bloc, as well as the two Arab political forces in parliament, came out in favour of his candidacy.

Incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secured the support of 46 lawmakers. Another 7 parliamentarians said they did not support any of the candidates.

Under the current procedure, the country’s president must entrust the formation of the government to one of the candidates. At the first stage, the chosen candidate is given 28 days to form a cabinet. If necessary, this period can be extended by another two weeks.

If the first candidate fails to form a government, the mandate may be given to another parliamentarian. If the second attempt also proves unsuccessful, early parliamentary elections are to be held within 90 days.

Recall that in the parliamentary elections held on 27 October, the political bloc led by Benjamin Netanyahu won 53 seats. Opposition forces won 48, and Arab parties a total of 19 parliamentary seats.

Forming a government coalition in Israel requires the support of at least 61 lawmakers. According to the election results, no political bloc was able to cross this threshold on its own.
