“The use of the word ‘Artsakh’ creates a basis in Azerbaijan for calling Vardenis ‘Basarkechar’.”
Globalinfo.az reports that this was said by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
According to him, resolving disputes over such names will lead to the signing of a peace agreement:
“Armenians can use ‘Artsakh’ expressions as much as they like, but then the Azerbaijani side will also voice the names ‘Basarkechar’ and ‘Western Azerbaijan’. The solution to these issues lies through the signing of a peace agreement.”
He also said that recognising another state’s independence is an important condition for the international recognition of one’s own independence:
“Independence is part of the international system and is based on the principle of mutual recognition.”
The prime minister noted that people who have moved from Karabakh should feel themselves citizens of Armenia, while the state and society should work to prevent their alienation.
In conclusion, Pashinyan called on Armenians to get to know their country better and to approach events from a civic standpoint rather than from the outside.
