Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to demand that NATO’s military presence in Europe be scaled back to 1997 levels during upcoming peace talks on Ukraine.

According to Globalinfo.az, The Telegraph reported this.

The report noted that Moscow could seek to use the talks to extract concessions regarding NATO enlargement and to weaken the alliance’s defense posture in Europe.

Such a demand could raise the issue of withdrawing NATO forces from Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, as well as Finland, which joined the alliance in 2023.

All five countries share a border with Russia.

According to the report, Moscow is also interested in addressing broader European security issues in the negotiations.

However, reports regarding the demands Russia might put forward are currently based on media claims, and there has been no official confirmation that such terms have been formally presented.
